It doesn’t matter if you’re a family member, caregiver, or both; assisting a loved one with a disability can be a challenging yet rewarding experience. If you have a disabled loved one, here are five things to empower your caregiving and make their life easier.

1. Research: Conducting research will provide insight into your loved one’s disability. Research can empower you to notice signs and symptoms that indicate their needs. Your understanding will also increase compassion, allowing you to step into their shoes.
2. Keep up with Advancements: Knowing the tools available at your fingertips can help make your loved one more independent. You can do this by joining mailing lists, networking with others in your position, and checking out online message boards.
3. Maintain Regular Encouragement: Communicating with your loved ones is crucial, whether it’s being honest about your capabilities or just encouraging them. You can encourage them to be more independent and to keep a positive attitude. 
4. Create an Emergency System: Having a plan in place in case of emergency can drastically improve the outcome of an unfortunate situation. It’s best to have a plan in place to tackle any emergencies that arise – but be sure to call 911 if the situation is dire. Emergency plans can include an alarm system or finding a case manager to be on-call.
5. Ask for Help: Asking for help can be challenging but ultimately necessary for your situation. Be aware of your limits and get another family member involved if needed. You do not have to be alone when handling a loved one’s disability.
