Emergency Medical Transportation vs
Non-Emergency Medical Transportation vs Traditional Taxi Service

It can be challenging to narrow down the best means of transportation for you or a loved one, especially when your trip is health-related. That’s why we put together this guide to help you understand the difference between emergency medical transportation, traditional taxi transportation, and non-emergency medical transportation!

  • Emergency Medical Transportation: As the name implies, this form of transportation is to be used if your health is potentially in immediate or serious danger. Emergency transportation will typically constitute an ambulance, or if necessary, an airlift. In these cases, call 911 immediately. This option may be covered by insurance, but this is entirely dependent on your insurance company.
  • Non-Emergency Medical Transportation: Non-emergency medical transportation is an excellent option for individuals that need assistance getting to health-related appointments and don’t have a means of getting there. Rides include (but aren’t limited to) non-emergency adult day services, non-emergency dialysis appointments, non-emergency one-day surgeries, and non-emergency mental health visits. This option is typically covered by insurance, but we encourage you to double-check with your provider beforehand.
  • Taxi: This option is ideal for non-immediate needs, such as a run to the grocery store. While still necessary, this form of transportation will get you from point A to point B. This option is 100% out of pocket and will never be covered by your insurance company.

When you choose Suburban Transportation for any of your non-emergency medical transport or taxi needs, we give you the option of a sedan, a wheelchair van, a standard van, a shuttle, or a non-emergency ambulette. Our drivers are fully capable of providing mental health-related assistance, post-treatment accommodations, recumbent position assistance, wheelchair lift, and walker/crutch assistance.
